One of my favourite locations along the mainland South Australian coast is the Deep Creek National Park on the Fleurieu Peninsula. This area features rugged and raw coastline that overlooks Kangaroo Island.
This particular photo is of the rocky coast near the picturesque Blowhole Beach. Blowhole Beach can be accessed via the Wild South Coast Way on the Heysen Trail walking track. There are easier options like the Blowhole Beach Hike which leaves from the Deep Creek Picnic Area, and there is also a 4WD track that gets you close.
The day that I was here, I was camping at Cobbler Hill and loved the Wild South Coast Way. The wind was intense during the night, but Cobbler Hill is a great little campsite. I'd spent the majority of the day hiking along the section of the Heysen Trail, walking past grazing sheep in a National Park(?). Despite the introduced sheep, the scenary is breathtaking.
My plan was to capture the setting sun and then take the steep hike back up to Cobbler Hill campground. This image was captured in late July, I was still amazed at how quiet South Australian National Park campgrounds are during winter. A couple of hikers passed through and there was another vehicle camping. That was it. Deep Creek National Park is about 100kms from Adelaide.
This photo is a 3-shot, long exposure panorama. When capturing a coastline like this, I have used long exposure to simplify a complex scene. The swell was not big, but it was windy and the rough seas seemed to distract the composition. Using the longer exposure, it almost softens the image to place more emphasis on the rugged rocks in the foreground.
